Is your business making the most of the internet ?
Posted by: Terry Irwin on the: 27 Aug 2010The internet has been around for some time now, but some businesses are still not using it to its full potential. Virtually every business can find multiple benefits from tapping into online resources effectively. If your company is currently lacking an online presence, it is highly recommended that you hire a web designer to build you an official website. This will provide a portal for two-way communication between your business and its customers.
In addition to sharing news and information about your company, a website also enables you to showcase your products and services in a variety of different ways.
• Blogs - A regularly updated blog serves several purposes. Firstly, it functions as an effective and dynamic way to keep customers updated about new developments regarding the company and its products. Secondly, it provides a forum to discuss relevant issues. Finally, a less obvious benefit is that frequently updated content will help the company website to rank higher in search engine results, thus increasing exposure.
• Email newsletters - Another vital way to keep in touch with your customers, emailing lists can be used to launch new products, promote special offers and raise awareness of what the company has to offer.
• Online shop - A virtual shop with a secure payment system can be used in addition to or instead of traditional retail premises. Both quick and convenient, an online catalogue can provide in-depth information on each product or service.
• Videos/ interactive content - One of the major benefits of online content over more traditional means of marketing, such as catalogues, is its capacity to integrate both videos and interactive displays into the website. These can be used to give product demonstrations, sales pitches and to fulfil a whole host of other purposes. Viral videos, which can spread like wildfire once they become popular, are also a highly effective marketing technique that is unique to the internet.

As an SME, internet marketing and retail has been at the centre of our development, because of its cost-effectiveness and large potential audience. As listed here, there are a variety of ways available to a new business to attract customers who may not be reached by traditional methods.

I agree with James, without internet marketing many current businesses would never get off of the ground. It opens up a multitude of opportunities that just weren't available 5-10 years ago.

It all sounds great, but who's got the time to do all of that?
